Here's some blog entries I meant to post earlier, concerning my reserch artifacts.
Artifact 1
My future career path dictates that I will be working within advertising, I’ve herd a lot about how advertising is changing, how traditional forms of marketing (TV, print etc.) are becoming less and less desirable to companies and ad agencies. Some ad agencies will now only produce work to be published online. I want to find out mediums I will likely be distributing for in the future.
The purpose of my first artefact will be to gain a general perception of advertising , I want to find out how people react to advertising and their opinions on it , In my research document I found that the general notion was that traditional forms of advertising are so wide spread that its effectiveness has become diluted, it’s a notion that I tend to agree with. I however want to find out to what extent does this effectiveness reach. Through my personal experiences, advertising, good or bad stays with us, it forms our opinion of the product, sometimes without even realising it. An advertisement only has to hold our attention for a few seconds for it to become effective. The artefact will be in the form of a questionnaire which will explore how people perceive advertising, how it affects them, and the lengths they would go to avoid it.
Artifact 1 results and artifact 2.
The main points I took from my first artefact was that I should take into account the age range that most marketing is aimed at, this and the fact that younger generations tend to have a more even balance between time ‘online’ and ‘offline’ means that I probably should narrow the age range of my research to 18-40. The other point being that a surprisingly high amount of people were fed up with the constant intrusion of advertising within their day to day lives. Everyone taking part in the questionnaire stated that they would, or already is using the web browser extension, ad blocker.
My second artefact will focus more on the standard of advertising. I will be showing four adverts, two TV ads and two viral. The adverts all promote men’s products, within fashion and toiletries. I want to find out how people respond to these video’s if they are shown through the same mediums. I will ask questions relating to their enjoyment of each video, and the impression it left on them. The idea of this artefact is to test the theory that advertising has become lazy and this being a factor in the demise of traditional forms of marketing. I’ve chosen two celebrity endorsed campaigns for the TV ads, and two virals selling similar products, which rely on originality as apposed to the ’lazy’ endorsement.
